The Netherlands and Germany are jointly allocating additional funds for the Border Information Points (GrensInfoPunten), the service desks where people can be informed about working, living, studying or doing business across the border.

From 2026 onwards, the three Limburg Border Information Points and the Rhine-Waal Border Information Point in Kleve, Germany, will have greater financial capacity to expand and improve their services.

Grensland Conference

The extra investment was officially confirmed during the Grensland Conference (Borderland Conference) in Sittard-Geleen by Minister Mariëlle Paul of Social Affairs and Employment and Provincial Executive Elianne Demollin-Schneiders. In addition to the Dutch government and the Province of Limburg, German partners are now also contributing extra funding to the border information points.

With the additional budget, the total amount available will grow to 2.5 million euros per year. In recent years, this was 1.5 million euros. The expansion is necessary because the number of enquiries at the Border Information Points is increasing and the situations faced by cross-border commuters are becoming increasingly complex. The extra funds will also allow further investment in the digitalisation of services.

10 Border Information Points

There are ten Border Information Points (GIPs) across the Netherlands, three of which are located in Limburg. Each year, they help around 34,000 people with questions about, among other things, taxes, health insurance, child benefit and pensions. In addition, these service desks organise information meetings and support employers dealing with cross-border employment.

The need for this support is considerable. In 2023, nearly 89,000 people worked in The Netherlands while living in Belgium or Germany. Conversely, thousands of Dutch people worked in neighbouring countries. With the extra investment, The Netherlands and Germany aim to further blur the border and make better use of cross-border opportunities.
